JOUR 228 Media, Self, and Society
In this course, I delved deep into the dynamics of mass media and its impact on societal beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Through rigorous examination of mass communication theories and methodologies, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how media messages shape individual development and societal norms.
From exploring key milestones in journalism and mass communication history to analyzing media portrayals of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and ability differences, I honed crucial skills in media literacy and critical thinking.
Additionally, I engaged in thought-provoking discussions about the role of mass media institutions in a democratic society, further enhancing my understanding of the complex interplay between media and society.

To apply critical thinking skills in evaluating media messages so that you are better able to determine which kinds of media messages are more reliable and trustworthy.
We are living in an Information Age when unreliable sources and bad actors are free to spread misinformation and disinformation with alarming ease.
It’s more important than ever that we, as the audience, have an effective means of evaluating the news and information we encounter every day.
